The Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) is an international non-governmental organization with status of consultative relationships with UNESCO. Created in 1967, the Council now brings together more than 170 research centers and graduate programs in the social sciences in 21 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Its institutional goals are the promotion of social science research and teaching; the support of collaborative scholarly initiatives between institutions and researchers both within and outside the region; and the contribution to the improvement of the quality of the debate in the public sphere, thus creating the conditions necessary for the adoption of good-governance policies and the construction of a more fair and democratic social order.
