In general, no. On the Internet, ALL CAPS READ
LIKE SCREAMING SOUND IN THE REAL WORLD. Type titles using mostly
lowercase.
The exception is of course with company names and other institutional abbreviations,
such as IBM, UNESCO, etc.

The intention of the "Special Cases" section of the Guide is that
book review titles should be omitted. In other words, you should enter no more
information than what the Guide says: "When entering book reviews be sure
to enter the author of the review in the author field, and the author and
title of the book reviewed in the title field. Enter the term "Reviews" in
brackets following the author and title of the book reviewed." As to the
order, the Guide has several examples, such as:
Author: Marcelo de Souza
Title: Paulo Freire. Pedagogia de Autonomia. [Reviews]
As for reviews of more than one book, you should create a separate record
for each book reviewed in the article, using the same pagination in each
record. In this case, each record will look alike with the exception of
the differing authors and titles of the books reviewed. In all other
respects, this situation is no different from book reviews that review only
one book.

You do not need to logoff unless someone else would
like to login. To enter another title, go back to the display of Journals
- to do that, follow the "see other issues" and "see other journals" links.
This will display the list of all journals you have access to.

The data you enter goes into the working file for
your institution. It does not immediately get added to the main database
and will not be immediately visible through the search interface.
Data will be added periodically (once or twice a month) or as required
by users.

For searching purposes the hyphen needs to go. If
a user searches for "Gomez Hernandez" the system will NOT find "Gomez-Hernandez".
Therefore, I suggest not entering the hyphens. Is this formally incorrect...?

Yes, in fact that's the way it's been done with earlier
issues. Just enter both titles in the title field. This creates ONE record
for the same article and makes it searchable in both languages. Separate
the titles with a simple period ending the first title.

No subscripts or superscripts in ASCII... type "O2".

Well, the agreement was to enter just the starting
page number, thus, enter simply "1". The ILL record will show "1-EOA",
meaning, "1 to End Of Article." Most journals do not give complete
pagination information.

Do not insert blank lines: the system will discard
them. Just enter a period and keep typing the second title.

First, see if the non-roman text is translated within the
article. Use that translation in place of the non-roman text. If the text is not
translated, enter the following message in brackets: [texto en caracteres no
romanos, solicite el artículo para ver el texto]

Simply enter as much of the page "name" as fits in
the page field, which is 10 characters long. "Suplemento" will fit, but
not so "Contraportada" which would become "Contraport".

Some interfaces (Mac Netscape 2.0) seemed not to
like double quotes. In addition, because of a technical decision, double
quotes can not be used in the database and will be converted into a single
quote: '

Some interfaces (Macintosh Netscape, for example)
don't allow tabbing from field to field. Other browsers (including Netscape
3.0 on Windows 95) on certain machines will let you tab, including tabbing
and landing on a "button" -- however, they won't let you press "enter",
you will have to click with the mouse. I found that Communicator
(Netscape 4.0) lets me tab down and up (with Shift-Tab) the fields. I can
also tab into a buttons and press enter to move on. This help speed
up data entry - you don't need to point and click every time...!

Only if you are 100% certain that what you are seeing
is an error. Could it be misspelled on purpose? Sometimes it
is really hard to tell, unless you can see the whole article. If
a word is obviously mistyped, you should correct it, but be careful!

Don't worry about the order in which you enter the
articles: the system will try to show them in ascending page number order.
The articles without a page number will be shown first, and those with
letters in the page number field will appear last-- however, non-numerical
page "numbers" will not be alphabetized in the data entry module. This
is not a problem, because end users will not see these screens: they will
see the general query interface, and there the articles
will appear in
order!
You may enter them in any order you wish- usually, the order they appear in the table of contents is easiest for data entry!

You can modify articles or issues at any time.
Any additions or changes will be immediately recorded in your file, which
is stored in the LANIC server, seconds after you click on the "Add" button!

Netscape is running out of memory. Try increasing
and/or clearing your cache (Options or Preferences menus). This seems
to be a problem with earlier versions of Netscape, particularly on Macintosh
systems. Talk to your systems administrator or computer advisor,
perhaps it is time for a system upgrade ;-)

If all other last names were printed in upper and
lowercase, except this one- then maybe this person insists on having his
or her name in all uppercase? See what makes sense given the context that
the information appears in, if you have access to the full article, check
there for clues!

This is going to happen often, sometimes articles
were entered twice (perhaps once at BYU, once by us) and one of the versions
needs to be deleted. Go into the list of articles for one of the
issues that has this problem. Print out the page. Then, try deleting
one of the duplicated articles at a time: simply click on the "DEL" button
that appears to the left of the article. The article you selected will
disappear immediately. Repeat until you have only the articles you wish
to keep.

Some of you have written to us about how slow the
system seems to be. Ning Lin, LANIC's technical director, informs
me that the overall usage of LANIC has been increasing rapidly (and unexpectedly)
about 30 % during the past few weeks. This impacts the speed of all
our processes. Fortunately, there is
a solution. The data entry interface can be accessed via two URLs:
http://www.lanic.utexas.edu/project/arl/ingreso
http://lanic.utexas.edu/project/arl/ingreso
Each URL corresponds to a different (but 'equivalent') machine. Should one of these prove slow, simply logout and try the other one.
Please remember that often, response delays are not caused by a particular server but by network problems. You can try using other UTexas resources (for example,www.utexas.edu) to rule out network problems.
Please let us know if you are still having problems. Gracias!

Inputted table-of-contents are added to the
searchable LAPTOC database at the end of each month.
Response: Thu, 22 Jan 1998
When an error occurs, please write down exactly what
the screen says, or, whenever possible select
"mail document" from your browser and send the
screenful to LANIC. Ning Lin, who is LANIC's technical
director, tells me most of the errors (like "Server 500"
Errors or "Document contains no data" errors)
are happening because the LANIC server is
extremely busy.
