Brazil mall employees rebel against hot Santa hat

SAO PAULO, Dec 16 (Reuters) - Brazilian shopping mall employees told the
boss they won't wear red Santa hats in the pre-Christmas period, saying
they suffered from heat, allergy and simply "felt ridiculous," local media
said on Thursday.
Employees at the Lindoia mall in the southern city of Porto Alegre acted
with the union's help and went as far as the regional Labour Department and
the prosecutor's office to get rid of the much-hated hats, officials told O
Estado de Sao Paulo daily newspaper.

The Labour Department recommended on Wednesday that the mall's management
abstain from making employees wear the hat.

The southern hemisphere's summer weather sent the thermometers up in
tropical Brazil this week to over 86 degrees (30 C). Still, bearded Santas
sport their thick red suits and hats, while open sleds with reindeer and
artificial snow are a typical decoration in homes and public places.
