Subject: December Retablos Symposium

Please forgive any cross-postings.
This symposium will take place in Las Cruces, NM, Dec 13-14, 1999.

"El Favor de los Santos: The Retablo Collection of New Mexico State
University" Exhibition and Symposium

We anticipate that through our scholarly research, exhibition, and
community activities, the history of the 19th-century Mexican retablo
will be redefined within a broader cultural context, emphasizing the
continuity of Mexican religious traditions that have sought the favor of
the gods since pre-Columbian times. "El Favor de los Santos: The Retablo
Collection of New Mexico State University" is the most comprehensive
exhibition to date exploring the subject of the 19th-century Mexican
retablo (devotional religious paintings on tin.)
The exhibition was made possible through generous grants and
contributions from the Stockman Family Foundation, the Rockefeller
Foundation, the New Mexico Office of Cultural Affairs, the U.S./Mexico
Fund for Culture, Fundacion Cultural Bancomer, Fondo Nacional para la
Cultura y las Artes, the New Mexico Arts Division, the Friends of the
University Art Gallery, and the New Mexico College of Arts and Sciences
Research Center.
After premiering at the University Art Gallery at New Mexico State
University, Las Cruces, in November 1999, the exhibition will subsequently
travel to the Museo de Historia Mexicana, Monterrey, Mexico; the Museo
Amparo, Puebla, Mexico; the Museo Franz Mayer, Mexico City, Mexico; the San
Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, California; the Mexican Fine Arts Center
Museum, Chicago, Illinois; and the University of Miami Lowe Art Museum,
Miami, Florida. The exhibition contains 170 retablos and 10 viceregal
paintings from the NMSU collection which are complemented by 75 loan
objects including statuary, paintings, and prints from the Museo Nacional
Antropologia, Mexico City; the Museo Franz Mayer, Mexico City; the Museo
de la Basilica de Guadalupe, Mexico City; the El Paso Museum of Art, El
Paso, Texas; the University of New Mexico Art Museum, Albuquerque, New
Mexico; and the Museum of International Folk Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Twelve photomurals and four installations will help contextualize the
retablo tradition.
The Symposium will bring together the most prominent scholars in the
field of devotional painting traditions in Mexico and Latin America. A
previous grant from the U.S./Mexico Fund for Culture funded these scholars
to spend up to a week researching the NMSU retablo collection. Symposium
participants are invited to attend the three-day celebration for the Virgin
of Guadalupe from December 10-12 organized by the local Tortugas Mestizo
tribe, the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Catholic Diocese, and the
larger community of Las Cruces. This important local celebration includes
matachine dancers, a procession of images of the Virgin of Guadalupe to the
nearby Tortugas mountain, and numerous practices related to the present
continuation of the retablo tradition.
