About the Cornell University Library:

Cornell's Latin American Studies Program was recognized in the early
1950s as a leading center for the study of anthropology. As early as
1956 the Program was coordinating Latin American activities and
resources in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Agriculture, and the
School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Cornell's greatest
concentration of resources is in the Andean Region, Mesoamerica, the
Caribbean, and Brazil; it has strong programs in rural sociology,
agricultural economics, anthropology, Latin American literature and
languages, agriculture and life sciences, international studies of
development, population studies, planning, law, industrial and labor
relations, nutrition, management, environmental engineering and Andean
geology. Its library resources include over 283,122 volumes in
Spanish, Portuguese, English and other languages; 4,376 periodical
titles.

In size, coverage and historical depth, it ranks within the top ten
Latin American collections in the United States.

Eligibility:

The competition is open to faculty members at institutions of higher
education in the United States who do not normally have access to
extensive library resources in Latin American studies. Cornell
students and employees may not apply. Applicants must be U.S.
citizens.

Terms and Conditions:

The fellowship will help defray travel and local expenses of the award
recipient who is expected to be in residence at Cornell as a Visiting
Scholar for a minimum of one month during the summer of 1999. The
award must be used before August 14, 1999. The Visiting Scholar
appointment may be extended for a longer period at LASP's discretion
with no increase in stipend. While in residence, the award recipient
may be asked to present an informal talk on his or her project to
interested members of the Cornell community. Also the 1999 award
recipient will be expected to submit a written report of his/her summer
