Dangerous Cargo

SANTO DOMINGO -- The Dominican Republic's foreign minister called for an
ban to all shipments of nuclear waste passing through the Caribbean basin
Foreign Minister Eduardo Latorre has urged other Caribbean statesmen to
band
together to lobby international organizations to put a stop to such
practices.

Caribbean countries are worried that seagoing vessels carrying nuclear
waste present an ongoing threat to the ecosystem. Latorre said President
Leonel Fernandez would bring up the issue during a summit of the Association
of Caribbean States in the Dominican Republic on April 16.
