College Approves Minority-only Hiring Policy
SCHENECTADY -- Union College announced that it will restrict its next
four faculty hires to minority candidates and will loosen its purse strings
in order to do so.
Called "targeted hiring," the minority-hiring policy was approved by a
two- thirds vote of the faculty last week. The college has been frustrated
from years of losing minority professors to other schools.
The most recent hire under the policy, Daniel Mosquera, was named last
week as assistant professor of Spanish.
The news angered some professors and prompted a debate over affirmative
action on campus. Some faculty members warned of unseen political and legal
ramifications.
Union College President Roger Hull said the policy was needed because
the school hadn't "produced results the other way." Source: Politico
