Solidarity with Franklin Pease

Lima, January 11, 1999

Dear friends:

We are addressing this letter to you – the teachers,
students, colleagues, readers and
friends of Franklin Pease García
Yrigoyen- to share some very sad news. In the last few days
Franklin has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This came
as a surprise to all since Franklin was getting ready to teach
a
course in Andean history at the Ecole de Hautes Etudes de
Paris, at the invitation of Professor Nathan Wachtel.

Franklin´s doctors have determined that he cannot be operated
on in Lima and that he should travel immediately to the MD
Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas in Houston.
It is expected he will be treated there by the pancreatic
cancer
expert, Dr. Douglas Evans. According to the specialists in
Peru,
this is the only hope for positive results.

As we all know, the cost of an operation and treatment of this

kind in the United States is very high and far exceeds
Franklin´s health insurance coverage and his familiy´s
financial means, as well as those of his colleagues at the
Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú who are helping
according to their possibilities. Because of this, an
international
solidarity account has been opened in coordination with the
Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. We hope that
donations from individuals and institutions will allow us to
make
sure Franklin receives the necessary treatment, recovers from
his illness and continues his valuable contribution to the
understanding of the history of Peru..
