NAFTA at Three: A progress Report
by Sidney Weintraub
Significant Issues Series
from the Center for Strategic and International Studies
February 1997
About the book:
The North American Free Trade Agreement, which has just completed its third
year of operations, was sold by its supporters and condemned by its
opponents with unusual hyperbole about how many jobs it would create (or
sacrifice) and how valuable (or injurious) it would be for many U.S.
industries. To get at the complete picture, the author analyzes the actual
performance of NAFTA and sets forth the main criteria by which the
agreement should be assessed- for instance, has it benefited both Mexico
and the United States (plus Canada)?. His main conclusion: NAFTA has
performed well under difficult circumstances.
