Hugh M. Hamill Graduate Fellowship
in
Latin American History

In serving the Department of History at the University of Connecticut from
1961 to 1994, Hugh M. Hamill earned an international reputation for his
teaching and scholarship in the history of Latin America. The Department of
History has initiated the Hugh M. Hamill Fellowship in Latin American History,
and the campaign to mentor, and to continue the department's excellent
tradition of training students in this field.
After receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard University and teaching for four years
at Ohio Wesleyan University, Hugh M. Hamill joined the University of Conn.
faculty and began to publish distinguished books and articles in colonial and
nineteenth-century Mexican history. He also mentored doctoral students who
have become recognized scholar-teachers in the United States, Canada, and
Latin America. At the University of Connecticut, moreover, he helped found and
then direct the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, which has won
Title VI funding from the U.S. Department of Education.
Hugh M. Hamill also held offices in the Conference on Latin American History,
the New England Council of Latin American Studies, and the Latin American
Studies Association. As acknowledgement of his excellence as a scholar, he was
named to the editorial boards of the Hispanic American Historical Review and
The Americas.
The Hamill Fellowship will help the Department recruit excellent graduate
students, the Center enhance its interdisciplinary program, and the University
sustain its reputation as a leading institution in the study of Latin America.
The goal is to raise $25,000 for and endowment to establish the Hamill
Fellowship. Contributions in any amount are invited. Gifts are tax deductible
to the extent allowable by the law. A donors' list will be maintained and
published at the completion of the campaign. Please make your check payable to
the University of Connecticut Foundation and designate "Hamill Graduate
