Bioy Casares considered by Jorge Luis Borges as one of the best
Argentinean fiction writers, was recently granted the title of
"Distinguished Personality of Argentine Culture", recognizing him as the most
illustrious Argentinean writer of fantastic and satirical fiction. Bioy
Casares is also winner of the 1990 "Cervantes Award".
Mr. Renan, whose career in film and theater spans more than
twenty-five years is the winner of numerous national and international
awards. His accomplishments include his splendid screen directional debut "La
Tregua" ("The Truce"), Argentina's first film ever nominated for an Academy
Award (in the Best Foreign Film category for 1974).
The ceremony honoring Bioy Casares and Renan, forms part of the
events commemorating the founding of and worldwide presentation of the
"InterAmerica Jerusalem", a nonprofit institution founded in 1966. The
institution was founded before the encyclical"Nostra Aetate" document issued
by Pope Paul VI establishing new parameters for relations between Roman
Catholics and Jews. Embracing Catholics, Islamic, Protestants, Jews and
Agnostics, the institution is committed to improving relations and dialogue
for the furthering of inter religious and community peace.
Hosted by the organization of the American States in Washington
D.C. ,the ceremony unites a prestigious group of ambassadors from North and
South America, representatives of American culture, high ranking religious
authorities, businesspeople and community leaders of all faiths.
