5TH ANNUAL LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SYMPOSIUM
April 10-12, 1997
Birmingham-Southern College
The Latin American Studies Program at Birmingham-Southern College invites
proposals for panels and individual papers from outstanding undergraduate
students who want to share their research with an international audience from
a broad representation of disciplines. We particularly encourage faculty
members to share this "call for papers" with their promising undergraduate
students. This conference, in its fifth year, is an excellent opportunity for
the participants to work on their presentational skills before they start
graduate studies. In addition, faculty members also have an opportunity
to showcase their institution's "best and brightest" in undergraduate
research. The official language of the conference is English, but papers in
Spanish and Portuguese will also be accepted.
GUEST SPEAKERS: Aside from student presentations, the conference also has
international guest speakers. The 1996 conference hosted the Hon. Salvador de
Lara (Minister of Economic Affairs, Embassy of Mexico in Washington, D.C.),
Alexander Springer (University of Vienna, Austria), Jim Kim (Partners in
Health, Cambridge, Mass.), and Leslie Wirpsa (National Catholic Reporter,
Kansas, Mo.).
FACULTY TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP: Aside from guest speakers and panel
presentations, the 1997 symposium will also host a full-day faculty workshop
on "Latin American Studies and the Use of Technology." The objective of this
workshop is to introduce the LAS faculty to the latest technology resources.
Guest speakers: Molly Molloy (librarian at New Mexico State University) and
Nelson Valdes (director of the Latin American Data Base at the University of
New Mexico).
SYMPOSIUM PROCEEDINGS: A selected number of papers will be published as a
journal of the conference proceedings. This publication is distributed
worldwide to libraries and LAS faculty.
PANEL PROPOSALS: To propose a panel, one needs to make sure it has a
chairperson and a discussant. A student may serve as either, but if a faculty
member is accompanying the group, the program committee encourages the
faculty to take on that role. The panel should have three or four papers and
organized around a single theme. A panel proposal should include a
single-page abstract for each of the papers. Each abstract should have a
short and clearly stated title.
PAPER PROPOSAL (ABSTRACT): To propose a paper, please send a single-page
abstract, along with a short and clearly stated title, to the LAS program
director. The program committee will review the proposals and attempt to
include them in panels.
DEADLINE: There is a limited number of panels for this conference, so one
should make sure that the proposal is sent in as soon as possible. Abstracts
must be received no later than January 31, 1997.
