Gente de razon

I'm writing a paper and I'm looking for some sources that deal with the
idea of "gente de razon" with respect to how the term was used to
differentiate between indians and those of Spanish descent. I'm looking
in particular at the Mexican case, but I assume the distinction was made
in other countries as well. What do people think about "gente de razon?"
Does anyone know how blacks were conceived of in these terms?

ANY info would be appreciated!
