The Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies
XXVII Congress 1996
LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN IN A CHANGING WORLD:
PATTERNS, PROSPECTS AND PROBLEMS
October 24-27, 1996
CERLAC, York University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

The Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies
(CALACS) announces its XXVII Congress to be held at York
University, Toronto, October 24-27, 1996.

The purposes of CALACS are (1) to facilitate networking and
exchange of information between those engaged in teaching and
research on Latin America and the Caribbean in Canada and abroad,
and (2) to foster throughout Canada and especially within the
universities, colleges and other centres of higher education, the
expansion of information on and interest in Latin America and the
Caribbean.

The 1996 Congress on "Latin America and the Caribbean in a
Changing World: Patterns, Prospects and Problems" will examine
the role that these two regions play in the global context, as
well as the impact that the external context has on both society
and culture. Special attention will be given to issues of
regional and hemispheric integration, Canada-Latin
American-Caribbean relations and interdependence; identity,
culture, gender, religion and literature in a globalized world;
the economic, ecological, political and cultural impacts of
restructuring; outward-oriented economic policies, societal
welfare, human rights and democratic processes; and indigenous
peoples, social movements, civil society and responses to
globalization.

The Congress will bring together academics, students, public
officials, media and business people, and NGO personnel from both
Canada and other countries. It is also open to the general
public. Participants from Latin America and the Caribbean are
particularly welcome.

Proposals for papers and panels in all areas of Latin American
and Caribbean scholarship should be submitted in two copies, one
to the appropriate Section Head (see below), and one to the
Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLAC)
at York University, in accordance with the following guidelines.
IF TWO SECTION HEADS (OR MORE) SEEM APPROPRIATE TO THE TOPIC OF
THE PAPER OR PANEL, SEND THE PROPOSAL TO EITHER ONE OF THEM (BUT
NOT BOTH).

PANELS: The programme committee strongly encourages proposals for
complete panels. Panel sessions should be planned to last 1 hour
and 30 minutes. A complete panel includes the following roles: an
organizer, 3-4 presenters, and a discussant (one individual may
serve in two roles). Panel proposals ideally include all the
information requested in the form below. If some information is
not initially available, the organizer should submit available
information and forward the rest soon thereafter. For submission,
please use the form provided, or type with your computer
structuring the information accordingly. Submit two copies, one
to the most appropriate Section Head, and the second one to Liddy
Gomes, CERLAC (see addresses below).
