The Department of Spanish & Portuguese at the University of
California, Berkeley in conjunction with the Class of 1941 World War II
Memorial Chair of Spanish American Literature along with the generous
cooperation of the Consulate General of Brazil in San Francisco are
organizing a symposium entitled "Literatura, Cultura e Historia nas
Americas: uma visao brasileira --Homenagem a Antonio Candido," which will
take place Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20, 1996. This is the
sixth symposium organized by us on Latin American literature, each one of
which is called "Encuentro Latinoamericano en Berkeley." Several
Brazilian intellectuals as well as many specialists on Brazilian culture
and literature will participate in this event. Among them are Walnice
Nogueira Galvao, Flora Sussekind, Jorge Schwartz, Paulo Arantes, Haquira
Osakabe, Eduardo Escorel, Luiza Moreira, Dain Borges, Silviano Santiago,
Howard Becker, Randal Johnson, Dain Borges, and Lourdes
Martinez-Echazabel. This symposium is the first of this series to focus
on Brazilian cultural and literary issues in the broader context of the
Americas.
In view of the capital importance of a symposium of this kind, we
would like to extend our cordial invitation to all those interested in
this topic. The event will take place in the Morrison Room at the Doe
Library (UC Berkeley) at 3:00 pm (Friday), 10:00 am & 3:00 pm (Saturday).
If you have any questions about the details of the symposium, please
contact our assistant Oswaldo Voysest (e-mail:
