Hi: I was on the road from 25 Sept. to 5 Nov. Am facing now huge stacks
of mail and many e-mails, including all your previous messages re the
cookie recipe story. This one--the Neiman Marcus version--is rampant on
the net now and has been firmly denied by NM as well as by folklorists.
The basic story goes back to the 1950s with Red Velvet Cake and even to
the 1940s (unpublished stuff in my file) for a cake recipe from a
railroad chef. But I don't have time now to rebut true believers. Gotta
dig into the mail, return a bunch of calls, and get cracking on proofing
the encyclopedia ofAm. Folklore then revising my textbook. Hardly time to
fish or ski any more; I wanna retire! Cheers, and thanks. --Jan
