This is George Szanto from Montreal, first time on lasnet. I've
very much appreciated the range of debates over the last months,
and especially the effort many of you have made to bring out news
from Mexico over the Chiapas horror story, and the Peru-Ecuador
story.

I'm a novelist, and have set a lot of my work in Mexico. I'm also
a professor of communications at McGill University here, with most
of my work being in cultural analysis.

I'm writing now because I'll be going to Brazil, Salvador
specifically, for ten weeks starting April 1, to teach a seminar at
the Universidade Federal da Bahia. I'll also be moving around a
bit, mainly southwards. And I'm looking for people down there to
contact. I've just completed a non-fiction book about Mexico which
tries to understand Mexico from its own perspectives--the book is
comprised of profiles of Mexican writers talking about their
worlds--and I'd like to begin a project that would deal in the same
way with Brazil--writers and artists there who would talk on tape
about daily life, politics, their work and so on. The idea being
to give us up here a clearer sense of the massive complexity down
there.

I'd appreciate any suggestions very much. Thanks.
