There are a number of good anthologies of Latin American women's writing in
English. Some that come immediately to mind are "Beyond the Border: A New Age
in Latin American Women's Fiction," Nora Erro-Peralta and Caridad Silva-Nunez,
eds.(1991); "Other Fires," Alberto Manguel, ed. (1986); "Short Stories by
Latin American Women: The Magic and the Real," Celia Correas de Zapata, ed.
(1990); "Scents of Wood and Silence", Kathleen Ross, ed. (1991). Some of the
newer non-gender-specific anthologies are also beginning to represent women a
little better. You might look at "A Hammock Beneath the Mango", for example.
I've also seen several regionally specific anthologies that include women
writers--there are a couple of anthologies of Central American short stories,
for example that have a good representation of women authors. I don't have the
reference for those at hand but if you are interested I could find them at
home.
I taught a Latin American literature course in translation at the Univ. of
Iowa when I was there and enjoyed it very much. One work I used that was very
successful and got a good response from the students was Alicia Partnoy's book
"The Little School" (Cleis Press) about her experiences as one of the
disappeared in Argentina.
Good luck,
Carol
