THE POSITION:
The West Valley College English Department is seeking applicants for two (2)
tenure track English instructor positions. A major responsibility will be to
teach composition courses that address the cultural and educational needs of
African American, Asian American, or Chicano/Latino students. One instructor
will develop specialized writing courses to facilitate the success of African
American students. All new instructors will teach the usual range of
developmental and collegiate composition courses designed for all WVC
students--students who come from various cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, and
educational backgrounds. Instructors will have opportunities to teach
ethnic, multicultural, and other literature courses as available.
ASSIGNMENT:
These are full-time, 10 month, tenure track positions, which begin FALL 1995.
The work assignment for teaching faculty consists of class assignments that
total a load factor of 1.00 each semester as determined by the Hours and Load
Factor Table, and other responsibilities that are necessary for the effective
and efficient operation of the faculty member's department, college, and
district.
SALARY:
Placement on the Academic Salary Schedule is based on evaluation of the level
of academic preparation, teaching and professional work experience. Initial
salary placement : $32,634 - $41,214.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master's degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or
composition; OR Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND Master's degree in
linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading,
creative writing, or journalism; OR possess a valid California Community
College Instructor's Credential in Language Arts and Literature; OR
2. The equivalent of the above. Candidates who claim the equivalent
qualifications must provide conclusive evidence of their qualifications.

3. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with persons of diverse
socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Teaching, training, and/or cultural life experience enabling one to
teach, tutor, mentor, and provide other educational experiences that take
into account the special nature of the African American, Asian American, or
Chicano/Latino experience.
2. Ability, training, experience, and/or demonstrated skill to:
a.) develop composition courses that will facilitate the success of
African American, Asian American, or Chicano/Latino students;
b.) use flexible teaching strategies compatible with the values,
culture, and learning styles of African American, Asian American, or
Chicano/Latino students.
3. Teaching, training, or experience in African American Literature or other
ethnic culture.
4. Ability to take a leadership role in meeting the needs of students from
diverse cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, or educational backgrounds.
5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, student groups,
college support services, and community service organizations.
6. Knowledge and understanding of the history, role, mission, and changing
demographics of the California Community College system.
7. Teaching, training, or personal experience relevant to the needs of
community college students.
8. Teaching, training, tutoring, mentoring, or other demonstrated skill in
working with students in:
a.) developmental writing courses;
b.) freshman composition courses.
9. Skill in conducting one-on-one writing conferences with students who have
a range of writing abilities.
10. Teaching, training, or experience in applying current theory to the
teaching of composition and/or literature.
