Given the critical situation that has emerged in the border between
Ecuador and Peru, we would like to ask for signatures in support of a
message calling for an inmediate cease fire between the two countries,
and a negotiated solution to the conflict.
Given the urgency of the situation, we believe that it would not be
convenient to start a discussion about the historical, geographical or
political details surrounding this issue, but rather to request that
those list members that agree with the following message express their
interest in signing it (by sending a message to either of the following
e-mail addresses).
This message will be sent to the mailing lists and USENET newsgroups
related to Ecuador and Peru, as well as to different Latin American
lists, in order to request signatures. We would also thank you if
you would help to distribute it, and you might also collect signatures at
your respective campuses or work sites. We will send the message, with
the collected signatures, on Wednesday, February 1st, to several news media,
and, if possible, to governmental and international institutions.

A CALL FOR A CEASE FIRE BETWEEN ECUADOR AND PERU
The undersigned, citizens of Ecuador, Peru and other countries, concerned
about the recent events in the border between Peru and Ecuador, and
interested in the social and economic development of the two nations,
would like to express the following:
a) We call for an immediate cease fire between the two countries.
b) We call for efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution of the problems
that have emerged, through political and diplomatic negotiations.
c) We reiterate our hopes for a strengthening of the ties of friendship
between the two nations, as a mechanism that would permit the achievement
of peace and social and economic development.

Estimados miembros de la lista:
Dada la critica situacion en la frontera entre el Ecuador y el Peru,
deseamos recoger firmas de adhesion a un mensaje para convocar a un cese
al fuego entre los dos paises, y a una solucion negociada al conflicto.
Dada la urgencia de la situacion, pensamos que no seria conveniente
desatar una discusion sobre los detalles historicos, geograficos o
politicos de la situacion, y en su lugar pedir que quienes esten de
acuerdo con el siguiente mensaje expresen su deseo de suscribirlo (a
cualquiera de las dos direcciones de correo electronico).
Este mensaje sera enviado a las listas de correo electronico y USENET
newsgroups relacionados con el Ecuador y el Peru, asi como a diversas
listas latinoamericanas, para recoger firmas. Les agradeceriamos si pueden
contribuir a difundirlo. Tambien podrian recoger firmas de adhesion en sus
respectivas universidades. El dia miercoles, lo enviariamos a los medios
de comunicacion y, de ser posible, a entidades gubernamentales e

LLAMADO A CESE AL FUEGO
Los abajo firmantes, estudiantes y profesionales ecuatorianos, peruanos y
de otras nacionalidades, preocupados por los recientes acontecimientos en la
frontera entre el Peru y el Ecuador, e interesados en el desarrollo
social y economico de los dos paises, deseamos expresar lo siguiente:
a) Hacemos un llamado a un inmediato cese al fuego entre las dos partes.
b) Solicitamos que se efectuen todos los esfuerzos necesarios para
llegar a una solucion pacifica a los problemas surgidos, por medio de
negociaciones politico-diplomaticas.
c) Reafirmamos nuestros deseos por que se afiancen los sentimientos de
amistad entre los pueblos ecuatoriano y peruano, como un mecanismo que
permita alcanzar la paz y el desarrollo social y economico de los dos
pueblos.
