ANNOUNCES A COMPETITION FOR:
GRANTS FOR GRADUATE STUDENT FIELD RESEARCH ON
THE TRANSFORMATION OF RURAL MEXICO
In 1992, the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies
of the University of California at San Diego
established the Ejido Reform Research Project to
analyze the implications for rural Mexico of recent
major changes in agrarian codes and agricultural
policies, such as the amendment to Article 27 of
the Mexican Constitution and the revising of
agricultural price supports. More than 25
experienced researchers from institutions in
Mexico, the United States, and Canada now
collaborate in the project. To promote the study
of agrarian Mexico by a new generation of
researchers, the project offers small grants to
support graduate students conducting fieldwork on
the social, economic, political, or ecological
consequences of the recent rural reforms.
Applicants must propose a specific plan for
fieldwork in one locality or region in rural
Mexico. They also must detail how their research
will increase our understanding of the processes
transforming rural Mexico. Successful applicants
will use the funding to carry out research for
their Master's theses, dissertation proposals, or
doctoral dissertations. Drawing on funds awarded
to the project by the Ford Foundation, the grants
are available to all students in accredited
Master's and Doctoral programs at Mexican, U.S.,
and Canadian universities. Preference will be
given to applicants who demonstrate that their
fieldwork will be supervised by a researcher
engaged in the study of contemporary rural Mexico,
and who have not previously received a grant from
the project.
Approximately ten to twelve grants ranging
from US$1,200 to US$1,800 will be available to
support six to twelve weeks of fieldwork in rural
Mexico during the period May 1, 1995 to October 31,
1995. Funding from other sources may be used
concurrently.

BECAS DE INVESTIGACION PARA ESTUDIANTES DE POSGRADO
QUE EXAMINAN LA TRANSFORMACION DEL SECTOR RURAL
MEXICANO
En 1992, el Centro de Estudios Mexico-Estados
Unidos de la Universidad de California en San Diego
establecio el Proyecto de Investigacin sobre la
Reforma Ejidal para analizar las consecuencias de
las recientes reformas en Mexico al marco juridico
agrario y a las politicas agricolas, tal como la
reforma al Articulo 27 constitucional y la
reestructuracion de los programas de subsidios
agricolas. Mas de 25 investigadores provenientes
de Mexico, Estados Unidos y Canada, estan
colaborando en la realizacion del proyecto. Para
promover la formacion de una nueva generacion de
estudiosos rurales, el proyecto ofrece pequenas
becas para estudiantes de postgrado para apoyar sus
investigaciones en el campo mexicano sobre las
consecuencias sociales, economicas, politicas, o
ecologicas de las reformas rurales.
Se requiere que los solicitantes propongan un
plan especifico para una investigacion de trabajo
de campo en una localidad o region en el sector
rural mexicano. La propuesta debe detallar la
forma en que la investigacion va a mejorar nuestra
comprension de los procesos que estan transformando
al campo mexicano. Los becarios utilizaran los
fondos otorgados para su investigacion de tesis de
maestria o de doctorado, o para la propuesta de
tesis doctoral. Estas becas, financiadas por la
Fundacion Ford, estan destinadas a estudiantes
cursando la maestria o el doctorado en
universidades acreditadas de Mexico, Estados Unidos
o Canada. Se dara preferencia a aquellos
postulantes que muestren que su investigacion de
campo va a ser supervisada por un investigador
especializado en estudios del campo mexicano
contemporaneo, y que no han recibido previamente
una beca de este programa.
Se pondran a concurso aproximadamente diez a
doce becas de entre 1,200 y 1,800 dolares (US) cada
una para apoyar de seis a doce semanas de trabajo
de campo en el Mexico rural durante el periodo del
1o de mayo de 1995 al 31 de octubre de 1995. Los
becarios podran utilizar concurrentemente
financiamiento complementario proveniente de otras
fuentes.
