As an educator, who was born in Nicaragua, I believe that LASNET might be
interested in a recently published book by Robert F. Arnove on EDUCATION AS
CONTESTED TERRAIN: NICARAGUA, 1979-1993 (Westview) that examines political and
educational change in my country. The book examines the struggles over
curricula and textbooks, the organization and financing of education, the role
of teacher unions, the nature of university autonomy and governance, and the
conceptualization and practice of literacy with the advent of the coalition
government of Violeta Barrios de Chamorro. There is also a chapter that
examines the goals, accomplishments, shortcomings, and contradictions and
tensions in education during the Sandinista period.
