Dear LASNET members:

The IX Southern Labor Studies Conference will be held at the University
of Texas at Austin from 26 October through 29 October 1995. Ray Marshall,
the former US secretary of labor, will deliver the keynote address. The
theme of this meeting will be "Labor Before and After Free Trade,"
highlighting Texas and the Southern United States as the crossroads of
the Americas for African, Anglo, and Hispanic American workers. However,
papers not directly related to the theme are equally welcome.

In the academic program for this event, we would like to involve
historians, sociologists, economists, anthropologists, and political
scientists who study labor affairs. I would particularly like to invite
scholars and labor leaders from Latin America and Canada as well as
graduate students in labor studies.

Please share your research and knowledge with us by submitting your
ideas for a panel and/or an individual paper. I would be happy to assist
panel organizers by finding chairs and commentators from others who will be
attending the Conference. Submit all suggestions by the end of March 1995
to Jonathan Brown, Institute of Latin American Studies, The University of
Texas, Austin, TX. 78712; tel: 471-5551; fax: 471-3090; e-mail:
