ASSOCIATE EDITOR, HISPANIC AMERICAN PERIODICALS INDEX (HAPI)
UCLA Latin American Center, Los Angeles, CA
Under the guidance of the Editor, manages the day-to-day operation
of the Hispanic American Periodicals Index, an online and annually
published index to the contents of approximately 250 scholarly journals
of interest to Latin Americanists. Trains and supervises editorial
and clerical staff and coordinates relations with technical staff at
the university computer center, the university research library, and
an off-campus computer typesetting company. Assists the Editor in
scheduling, project planning, budgeting, and documentation.
Regular duties include original indexing of articles written in any
of six western European languages and revision of the indexing of
editorial assistants and off-campus contributors; proofreading of printouts
of keyed data; online and hands-on library research. Works with
the Editor to review galleys and other editorial lists associated with
the production of the index. Conducts online searches of the database
and oversees billing of online search and document delivery requests.
Updates online bibliographic records as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
Strong academic background in Latin American studies or equivalent
experience working with Latin American scholarly materials. Ability
to read and analyze scholarly information written in English, Spanish,
Portuguese, and preferably at least one other western European language.
Thorough knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and accentuation
in these languages. Experience in compiling automated bibliographic
indexes or catalogs. Strong computer skills, including a working
knowledge of WordPerfect and MARC-based library cataloging rules.
Excellent supervisory and interpersonal skills; strong oral and written
communication skills. MLS or equivalent library experience preferred.
STARTING SALARY: $28,332-$34,044 depending on qualifications and experience
