ANNOUNCES A COMPETITION FOR
GRANTS FOR GRADUATE STUDENT
FIELD RESEARCH ON THE
TRANSFORMATION OF RURAL MEXICO
The Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies of the University of
California at San Diego, in collaboration with more than 25
scholars in Mexico, the United States, and Canada, is conducting
a three-year research project on the implications for rural
Mexico of recent changes in agrarian codes and agricultural
policies. As part of this project, we are pleased to announce a
competition for small grants to support graduate students
conducting fieldwork in rural Mexico on the social, economic,
political, or ecological consequences of recent modifications to
Article 27 of the Mexican Constitution and other changes in
Mexican rural development objectives and agricultural policies.
Funded by the Ford Foundation, these awards are available to
students in accredited Master's and Doctoral programs at Mexican,
U.S., and Canadian universities. Grantees will use the funding
to carry out research for their Master's theses, dissertation
proposals, or dissertations.
Applicants must propose a specific plan for fieldwork in one
locality or region in rural Mexico. The proposal must explain in
detail how the research will increase our understanding of the
transformation of rural Mexico. Preference will be given to
applicants who demonstrate that their fieldwork will be
supervised by a researcher participating in the Center's research
project on ejido reform or by another scholar specializing in the
study of contemporary rural Mexico.
Approximately eight to ten grants ranging from US$1,200 to
US$1,800 will be available to support six to twelve weeks of
fieldwork in rural Mexico during the summer of 1994. Funding
from other sources may be exercised concurrently. Grants will be
disbursed after May 15, 1994, for complete utilization by
September 30, 1994.

BECAS DE INVESTIGACION PARA
ESTUDIANTES DE POSTGRADO QUE
EXAMINAN LA TRANSFORMACION
DEL SECTOR RURAL MEXICANO
El Centro de Estudios Mexico-Estados Unidos de la
Universidad de California en San Diego, en colaboracion con mas
de 25 investigadores de Mexico, Estados Unidos, y Canada, esta
llevando a cabo un proyecto de investigacion sobre las
consecuencias de las reformas recientes en Mexico al marco
juridico agrario y a las politicas agricolas. Como parte de este
proyecto, nos complace anunciar un concurso de pequenas becas
para estudiantes de postgrado para apoyar sus investigaciones en
el campo mexicano sobre las consecuencias sociales, economicas,
politicas, o ecologicas del recientemente modificado Articulo 27
de la Constitucion Mexicana, o de las demas reformas rurales.
Estas becas, financiadas por la Fundacion Ford, estan destinadas
a estudiantes cursando maestria o doctorado en universidades de
Mexico, Estados Unidos, o Canada.
Se requiere que los solicitantes propongan un plan
especifico para una investigacion de trabajo de campo en una
localidad o region en el sector rural mexicano. La propuesta
debe detallar la forma en que la investigacion va a mejorar
nuestra comprension de la transformacion del campo mexicano. Se
dara preferencia a aquellos postulantes que muestren que su
investigacion de campo va a ser supervisada por uno de los
investigadores que participan en el proyecto de investigacion del
Centro sobre las reformas rurales, o por algun otro investigador
especializado en estudios del campo mexicano contemporaneo.
Se pondran a concurso aproximadamente ocho a diez becas de
entre 1,200 y 1,800 dolares (US) cada una para sustentar de seis
a doce semanas de trabajo de campo en Mexico durante el verano
del 1994. Los becarios podran utilizar financiamiento
complementario proveniente de otras fuentes. Las becas seran
desembolsadas despues del 14 de mayo de 1994 para su utilizacion
completa antes del 30 de septiembre de 1994.
