DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH
CENTER FOR U.S.-MEXICAN STUDIES

The Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the University of California, San
Diego, anticipates an opening for the position of Director of Research
(Academic Administrator IV), appointment to be effective July 1, 1994.
The incumbent will have major responsibility for conceiving, funding, and
executing academic and public service programs, including a large
residential fellowship program, thematically focused research workshops,
multi-year basic research projects, an annual summer training program in
U.S. studies for Latin American social scientists and non-academic
professionals, a publications program, and a variety of public service
activities to meet the needs of businessmen, journalists, public
officials, and other non-academic leaders from both Mexico and the United
States. The Director of Research will be actively involved in extramural
fund-raising and reporting to funding agencies on utilization of grants.
The incumbent will serve as the Center's chief operating officer in the
Director's absence.
Required qualifications include: Ph.D. degree in one of the social
sciences or history; complete fluency (oral and written) in Spanish and
English; in-depth substantive knowledge of Mexico and issues affecting
U.S.-Mexican relations; extensive professional experience in Mexico;
ability to function effectively in a multicultural and multinational
environment; very strong organizational and managerial skills, including
demonstrated capacity to organize and administer academic and/or public
affairs programs; excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to
raise funds from foundations, corporations, government agencies, or
individual donors; excellent writing and oral communication skills;
capacity to do original research on Mexico-related subjects and to advise
predoctoral scholars on their research; substantial publications record
focused on Mexico, including articles in major academic journals, books,
and contributions to mass media. Rank and salary commensurate with
qualifications and experience.
