Latin America Data Base at the Latin American Institute, University of New
Mexico seeks a full-time Staff Writer II to write articles and news summaries
on Latin American economic and political affairs, and to assist in all stages
of production of electronic publications, ranging from information collection
to dissemination.

budget/policy)

Minimum Requirements
Bachelors degree in Latin American Studies, Political Science,
Journalism or related field; 3-5 years professional writing experience
(including published articles); demonstrated knowledge and comprehension
of Latin American political and economic affairs and concepts; reading
fluency in Spanish, demonstrated ability for Spanish-English
translations and capacity to write original English-language articles
based on Spanish-language sources; experience with PCs and word
processing; ability to work in a team environment; ability to produce
under deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree in areas above; experience living, working, or studying
in Latin America; reading knowledge of Portuguese; experience in
computer networks and electronic mail.
Summary of Duties
Writes articles and summaries for one or more LADB publications.
Translates source materials from Spanish to English. Compiles source
materials from news feeds, electronic networks, hard-copy publications,
interviews, library references and other sources. Organizes source
materials for other writers and editors. Proofreads one or more LADB
publications. Transmits several versions of formatted electronic files
to commercial database distributors and subscribers on electronic mail
and conferencing systems. Participates with editors and other staff in
defining editorial direction of LADB publications. Performs resource-
oriented activities, including the dissemination of information via
workshops, presentations, special reports, etc. (The above shall not be
considered inclusive of all duties that may be required for the
position.)
